GAELS TAKE THE INITIATIVE JAN. 23, 2010
23 Jan, 2010 -- What is an off-weekend for the team as they prepare for a fundraiser to help Haiti some Gaels took the initiative to get to meets in an effort to achieve travel standard. Queen’s athletes were competing at U of T Fred Foot Invitational and the St. Lawrence University Invitational in Canton, NY. It proved to be a very productive weekend for those who opted to compete. The Gaels won 6 medals (2-gold, 2-silver, 2 bronze), recorded an ALL TIME TOP TEN PERFORMANCE, posted 4 PB’s, and three more athletes achieved travel standards Leading the way was LIZA HOWARD who ran to #9 ALL TIME in the women’s 3000m rankings with her fine solo effort of 10:06.22 at SLU as she ran away from the pack to garner gold. Liza was followed by rookie STEPHANIE HULSE who finished second in 10:35.11 in her first race of the indoor season. In Toronto MICHAEL NISHIYAMA raced to team standard and gold in the men’s 600m posting a time of 1:24.62. Michael was closely followed by a U of T runner and teammates JOSHUA POTVIN (1:25.19) and JEFF MOUNTJOY (1:26.11) in third and fourth place. LEAH LAROCQUE brought home silver from the women’s 1500m running to a season best 4:47.67. MEGAN ANDREWS ran to her third consecutive PB performance in the 1500m breaking 5-minutes for the first time with a fine 4:58.69. ANDERS KLAUS completed the Gaels medal haul when he ran to bronze in the 1000m in 2:36.02. Other performances of note on the day were JEFF COSTEN who posted a 19-second PB in the 3000m running to a team leading 9:05.79. OLIVER HATHEWAY rebounded from a less than Oliverisk performance in Windsor to record 9:06.11. Running his first track race since his rookie season was TREVOR WALMSLEY who posted a solid 9:06.21. ALEX GREEN ran to a 3-second PB in the 1500m with his 4:22.53 clocking. The good deed of the weekend was performed by TAYA McGILLIVARY. Taya was on a bus heading to Toronto to compete in the Friday night pentathlon when the driver for no apparent reason suddenly pulled over to the side of the road. Taya being Taya went to investigate. The driver was having chest pains. A former lifeguard Taya took the driver outside sat him down and started asking questions. She discovered he angina and had his meds with him. She got him to take his nitroglycerin and then called an ambulance. By the time a new driver and the ambulance arrived plus hitting Toronto rush hour Taya arrived at the fieldhouse having missed the first two events of the pent. While she was very disappointed at not being able to compete in the pentathlon Taya can take solace in the fact she did a very good deed.
