Cornell Southern Tier Open, Jan 8, 2010
Queen's Team Logo 17 Jan, 2010 --

The Gaels ventured south the Friday before classes began to test their fitness post exam/Christmas break.  It was clear people had worked hard during exams and over the break as some excellent performances were turned in.

Leading the way was rookie MARISSA WALTER who brought home three medals (2-golds and a silver medal) and two ALL TIME top ten performances.  Marissa turned in two PB performances in the 60m running 7.97 and 7.91 to move to #6 ALL TIME.  Marissa finished just ahead of teammate VERONICA CATRY (7.99) as the Gaels went 1-2-4 in the 60m.  Veronica turned the tables slipping across the finish line just ahead of Marissa as they went 1-2 in the 200m posting times of 26.42 and 26.55.  Marissa’s time of 26.55 moved her to #8 ALL TIME on the 200m list.  Marissa led off the women’s 4x400m relay which demolished the competition winning by over 7-seconds.  Veronica matched Marissa’s medal output bringing home 3 (2-gold; 1 silver) running second on the relay.  JAN STIRLING (58.21) won two golds racing to a time just off her Queen’s Record in the 400m (58.13) and put the women out of reach with a great third leg on the relay running 58.0.

Not to be out done by the women the men put up some quality performances.  SHANE KELLY won gold and silver with a great effort in the men’s 500m (1:09.51) to nip in ahead of the Cornell runner.  Shane ran a PB anchor leg on the 4x4 relay which finished second to Cornell.  TYLER NIGHTINGALE running out of a “slower” section stole the gold with a PB 23.28 clocking.  Tyler ran a solid 52.2 third leg on the 4x4 to bring home two medals.  GORD FRENKE won double silver with an outstanding effort in the 400m (50.26) to move to #4 ALL TIME 0.01 seconds out of third.  Gord also put in a 51.9 second leg on the relay.

LEAH LAROCQUE ran a big PB in the mile posting the #6 ALL TIME performance in the event 5:09.23 in winning gold.  The other medal winner fort the Gaels was GRANT HENNEBERG who claimed silver in the triple jump.

So when things were all over the Gaels had come home with 11 medals [7 golds; 5 silvers], 4 ALL TIME TOP TEN PERFORMANCES, and 12 PB’s.
